England’s great modern playwright Harold Pinter performed a stunning interpretation of Samuel Beckett’s one-man play, Krapp’s Last Tape, at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2007. Join us for a screening of the BBC film of that performance, followed by a panel discussion featuring actor and director Matthew Burton, director of the film Working with Pinter, and playwright John Guare, among others.

Harry Burton will offer a full-day workshop on Pinter for actors. This event will be a practical and accessible introduction to the particular challenges of acting in the dramatic work of Harold Pinter. Attending a workshop of some scenes from his plays, Pinter once observed that “it’s not easy to come into something that began earlier and ends later”. Nevertheless, Pinter, who came late but enthusiastically to working with students, relished the challenge of workshopping a piece from one of his plays rather than the whole thing. It can be an exciting process, not least if the experience whets the appetites of performers and observers for a deeper knowledge of the author’s work. No previous knowledge or experience of the author is required. Come and observe, or get up and try stuff. To register interest in participating, please contact The Segal Center.

Actor/director Harry Burton collaborated closely with Harold Pinter over a long period, including in 2007 a sell-out London revival of The Dumb Waiter. Burton is also director of a documentary Working With Pinter, which for the first time takes viewers into the rehearsal room with the Nobel-winning dramatist. Earlier this year Burton curated the PEN/CUNY Tribute to Harold Pinter at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center.
