Bridging the gap between the academic and performing arts communities through dynamic public programs and digital initiatives that are free and open to all.
Keith Josef Adkins and his collaborators founded The New Black Fest in New York City in 2010 to fulfill a need among Black American and Diasporic playwrights for further opportunities to develop new work and connect with audiences outside the confines and criteria of mainstream theatre institutions. Adkins’ agenda is both political and artistic: The New Black Fest encourages Black playwrights to strive for diverse aesthetics, perspectives, and subject matter. Since its founding, the New Black Fest has produced year-round programming, as well as a fall festival. It also co-founded the American Slavery Project, which showcases plays on American slavery and the Civil War by Black writers. Adkins joins us in a discussion of the future of The New Black Fest, moderated by Sarah Rose Leonard; New Black Fest playwrights Dominique Morisseau (2012-2013 PONY Fellow), Paul Notice, and Judith Adong (2012 Fullbright Scholar) will preside over readings from their work and join in the discussion.
