He studied sociology and music, which laid the foundation for his eclectic career blending music, theatre, and visual arts. Goebbels' early work included record productions and performances with groups like the Goebbels/Harth-Duo, Sogenanntes Linksradikales Blasorchester (The Socalled Left-Radical Wind Orchestra), and Cassiber. His staged concerts and music theatre pieces, such as Der Mann im Fahrstuhl and Newtons Casino, showcased his innovative approach.
Goebbels's compositions for ensembles like the Ensemble Modern and Ensemble Intercontemporain include Red Run and Herakles 2. His major orchestral work Surrogate Cities premiered in 1994, followed by Industry & Idleness in 1996 and Walden in 1998.
